Determine the type of funny shirt you want to create. This comes down to who your audience is and what you personally consider to be funny. A teenager might enjoy a T-shirt design with a silly character, an an adult might enjoy a shirt with a quote from a politician. Brainstorm using paper and pencils. Generally, the vast majority of funny shirts will be printed on T-shirts, tank tops, sweatshirts or jerseys.

Choose a graphics program for creating your funny shirt's design. If you don't have access to a computer program such as Photoshop, the freeware software GIMP is the perfect alternative. It has many of the same tools.

Open the program. Select "File," then "New." Select the dimensions of you want for your design. When uploading your design to a site such as CafePress for printing, see that company's requirements on image size. Choose either white or transparent as the background. A transparent background allows you to print on non-white shirts.

Use layers to add different elements within your design. For instance, if you have a graphic of a chicken trying to cross the road, create the chicken and sign on separate layers so you can make changes to each without those changes effecting the other elements. Use the the tools and filters to refine the design. For instance, you might use the "Pen" tool to create a shape, the "Paint Bucket" tool to fill it and the "Blending Options" to add finer details. Once you're happy with your image's appearance, save it as a high resolution JPEG for printing.

Upload your shirt design to a site such as CafePress or Zazzle, where you can place it on a variety of shirts. Alternately, you can print your funny shirts using a heat press or a screen-printing machine if you have access to one. Finally, you can contact a T-shirt printing service in your area to manufacture your shirt.
