How to Wash Gray Hair

Eventually, almost everyone gets gray hair. It's important to know how gray hair differs from hair that hasn't grayed yet, and how to wash gray hair. Gray hair is hair that has lost most of its pigment that gives it color: melanin. Gray hair has more cuticle layers than hair that hasn't grayed yet. That means, generally, it's thicker, coarser and dryer. Keeping it shiny and healthy-looking the same as you would hair that isn't gray requires different shampoo and a little more attention while washing it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Shampoo Selection

    • 1

Choose hydrating shampoo meant to add moisture deep into the hair. Do not use shampoo meant to add a lot of protein to the hair.

    • 2

Choose shampoo purple in color as its base color. Purple color shampoos help make gray hair shinier.

    • 3

Choose a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoos eliminate build up to which gray hair is more susceptible.

    Wash

    • 4

Spend more than the usual amount of time working shampoo into gray hair than you would working shampoo into hair that isn't gray. Start shampooing at the crown of the head and root of the hair and shampoo your way down to the end of the hair and around the rest of the head.

    • 5

Comb or brush shampoo further into the gray hair with a comb or brush that is fine enough to help work the shampoo deep into the greater amount of cuticle layers peculiar to the gray hair. Use a comb or brush that has teeth or bristles arranged in such a way so that it isn't apt to break the coarser gray hair.

    • 6

Use a clarifying shampoo on gray hair once a week or once every two weeks. Use it the same as you would the regular purple-colored shampoo, working it deep into the more numerous cuticle layers of the gray hair.

    • 7

Rinse shampoo out of gray hair longer than you would hair that isn't gray. Use purest water possible to rinse hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take more time and care washing, rinsing and combing or brushing gray hair than you would hair that isn't gray, since it requires more attention.
