How to Improve Poise
Poise does not come naturally to everyone---in fact, many people who may strike you as eternally charismatic and charming have had to work quite hard to attain the confidence to appear this way. The key to gaining poise is to first attain a healthy---though not arrogant---sense of self-confidence. The following tips will help you to do just that. Once you have confidence in who you are and what you have to say, your poise will improve dramatically.

1
Stop judging yourself. Making peace with who you are, flaws and all, is crucial to becoming a more confident, happy, and poised person. When you start to hear that inner voice criticizing how you look or the joke you just made, it is up to you to stop it. Once you start to appreciate yourself more, so will others, and your confidence and poise will benefit as a result.

2
Become more self-aware. So, maybe you aren't the most graceful person around; no problem---just acknowledge it and do your best to improve (we can't all be Grace Kelly, after all!). With self-awareness and acceptance about who you are, including both your strengthsand your weaknesses, you can become more comfortable in your own skin. That confidence and comfort with oneself is always an attractive asset to others, and will increase your own sense of poise.

Relax! if you have made a mistake, try your best to fix it; if you are put in an awkward position, put on a smile and sail through; if things don't seem to be going your way, do whatever you can to turn the situation around. In order to increase your self-confidence and poise you must first learn to keep things in perspective and react to situations rationally. Part of improving your poise is remembering not to freak out!

4
Stand tall. It may be annoying when your mother chides you to stand up straight, but it is true that good posture always emanates confidence and poise. Wherever you are, pay attention to your posture---remind yourself to keep your back straight and your shoulders relaxed (but not slumped!). This stance will give you an air of easy confidence... even if you are secretly feeling a bit nervous or stressed!

Remember to breathe. In stressful situations, we can often become flustered and lose our self-confidence. When you find yourself in trying situations, remember to focus on your breath---inhale deeply through your nose and let your breath out slowly. Though it may sound silly, when you calm down your breathing, you can calm down your nerves, as well---which will lead to improved poise under fire.
