How to Get Rid of an Under Arm Rash

An underarm rash can be caused by many different things. The rash is often red and painful and can also be itchy. The most common causes of underarm rash are an allergic reaction to deodorant or laundry detergent, a rash due to shaving, friction, fungus, contact dermatitis or heat. Most often the rash is easy to treat and will go away within a few days. If the rash becomes extremely painful or gets worse you should see your physician.

Find out what is causing the rash. Think about any recent changes, such as using a new deodorant or switching laundry detergents. Many skin types are sensitive to certain chemicals that are in these products and a sudden change can cause irritation.

    • 2

Use a hydrocortisone product to prevent itching from irritation or allergies. Constant scratching can only make the rash worse and slow down healing time. Apply a thin layer of 1% hydrocortisone cream directly to the rash and rub it in well. Use the cream several times a day as needed for itch.

    • 3

Discontinue use of any scented products on the underarms. Use an unscented deodorant and a perfume-free laundry detergent. Avoid using fabric softener as this can also irritate the skin. There are many types of products on the market that are made specifically for sensitive skin. Try a laundry detergent that is made for babies as these are gentle on the skin and are made without chemicals.

Wear loose clothing to prevent friction on the skin. Tight clothing can rub and cause irritation. Choose clothes that properly fit your body. Wear a natural fabric such as lightweight cotton instead of heavier fabrics like fleece, which can cause excessive sweating.

    • 5

Avoid shaving too closely under the arms. Use a new razor and apply a layer of shaving cream or lathered soap to the skin before shaving. Never shave over the same areas of skin repeatedly as this can cause irritation. Try waxing your skin or using another type of depilatory if shaving continuously causes irritation.

Apply a washcloth to the area for instant relief of the itching and irritation. A cool compress can help soothe irritated skin. Run a washcloth under cold water and apply to the skin. Dry the area completely once you have removed the wet cloth.
