How to Share a Nebulizer

Nebulizers use forced air or other pressure to deliver breathing treatments, such as asthma medications, in a mist form that is inhaled directly into the lungs. These machines are costly, so they can be rented by pharmacies or medical centers and can by shared by multiple people in a family if they are safely cleaned, prepared and disinfected.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Cleaning a Nebulizer to Share

    • 1

After use, wash the individual's mouthpiece or mask and the medication cup in warm, soapy water and allow to air dry.

    • 2

Soak the mask in a 1-to-3 vinegar-to-water solution, rinse in water and air dry. This will disinfect the mask.

    • 3

Package the machine, the air tube and the dry medication cup into a clean container for return to the rental company or for delivery to another person to share.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although masks and mouthpieces can be disinfected, these items are more commonly washed and saved for one individual; each person's mouthpiece can be placed onto the end of the clean air tubing of the nebulizer machine without risk of contamination.
