How to Find Tanning Levels on Lotions

If you are a regular tanner (either outside or in a tanning bed) you want to use tanning lotions to increase the amount of light exposure your skin absorbs. This is essentially the opposite of what sunscreen does, so looking at the UV protection on sunscreen is not going to help you determine what kind of tanning lotion you should purchase. On most labels there is a basic tanning level listed. This level indicates what skin type is best suited to use the particular lotion.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look on the back side of the tanning lotion container. This is typically where the majority of lotion information is displayed.

  2. Step 2

Check the label for an indication of skin type it should be used with. This is going to range from skin type 1 to type 6. Type 1 is extremely fair skin while type 6 is extremely dark skin that rarely burns.

  3. Step 3

Inspect the front of the tanning label if you do not see the skin type listed on the back of the label.

  4. Step 4

Talk to the individual working at the tanning salon about the skin type rating if either it is not posted on the tanning lotion or what skin type you would be considered. Most tanning salons offer a wide range of tanning lotions and the individuals working there are going to know what lotion works best with each skin type.
