Children love craft projects. With young children it is best to prepare the craft project before starting. Their patience is short and they can only focus long enough to assemble the project. Prepare by cutting the shapes and components of the craft. Choose projects the children can play with after they are completed such as people crafts.
Things You'll Need
- Construction paper
- 5 Clothespins
People From Shapes
Cut two large circles, eight small circles, two large rectangles, five long rectangles, three squares, two ovals and a hexagon out of construction paper.
Let the child choose the shapes he wants to create a person. Begin by asking the child to choose a head. After the head have him choose a body, legs, arms, hands, feet and hair.
Help the child glue the shapes together to create a person. You could glue the circle to a rectangle for the head and body. Long rectangles could be the arms and legs. Use small circles for the hands and feet and three squares around the head for hair.
Encourage the child to choose the shapes himself. Talk about the shapes as the child chooses them. After the shapes are glued together to make a person, have the child count the number of each shape he used.
Give the child markers to draw a face on the head of the person.
Stand the clothespin up so the circle is on top of the clothespins, the slit in the clothespin will be the legs. Decide the gender of each clothespin before you start the craft.
Draw a face on the head of all the clothespins to make sure the face looks like the desired gender. A female should have longer eyelashes, rosy cheeks and lips. A man could have facial hair.
Cut yarn to glue on the head for hair. For man's hair cut the yarn into 1-inch pieces. Woman's hair should be at least 2-inches long. After the glue has dried cut the hair if it is too long.
Wrap a piece of felt around the body of the clothespin. For a woman's body add another piece of felt that is gathered around the waist for a skirt. Glue the felt to the clothespin. Cut small circles of felt to glue to the front of the shirt as buttons.
Let the glue dry completely on the craft before playing with it. Let the children name the people and play with them.
Tips & Warnings
- Use different kinds of fabric in addition to the felt for variety in the clothing.
- Add embellishments to the people by tying ribbon around the body or adding sequins or beads.
