How to Make Emoticons in Gmail

Gmail is a free Web-based email service provided by Google Technology Inc. It has a cool feature that enables you to chat with family, relatives, friends or business contacts while you are checking or writing an email. When typing a message in the chat window, you can add an emoticon by clicking the blue smiley face. If not in the list provided, you can make emoticons in Gmail. An emoticon is a small, animated image used by a person chatting as a way of expressing his emotion or telling what she is doing without writing a word or phrase.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to Gmail website (see Resources), enter your username and password, and click on "Sign in."

    • 2

Go to the "Settings" link on the right top corner of the webpage. Click the "Chat" link and select "Emoticons on" next to "Emoticons," and hit the "Save Changes" button. It will automatically animate an emoticon you will send when chatting.

    • 3

Look for the name of the person you want to chat with. If someone is online, a green, yellow or red ball will appear beside his or her name. A green ball means the perssn is available, yellow means their status is "Idle," and red means "Busy." If the ball is gray, the person is offline or has set the status to "Invisible." Another way to find a person's name is by clicking "Contacts" on the left side of the Gmail page, or input their name on the search box provided.

    • 4

Pick the name of the person and click the "Chat" link. A small chat window will open.

    • 5

Make emoticons in Gmail by typing a combination of keys in the message field, such as "<3," ":(|)," and ":D," just to name a few. Then hit the "Enter" key. To see a list of emoticons you can make in Gmail, go to the Gmail emoticons websites (see References).
