How to Mix Scents for Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is an alternative treatment for a variety of conditions, such as colds and other upper respiratory problems, headaches and muscle aches. It also is often used for relaxation and calming, as an aid for sleeping, and in massage and bathing. The calming effects of aromatherapy might also be beneficial for pets.

1
Wash your hands prior to mixing oils. Add 4 tsp. (20 ml) of carrier oil to a clean mixing bottle. Carrier oil is an oil with a low scent, such as jojoba.
-
2
Add 10 drops of your choice of essential oils for a 2.5 percent dilution. This strength is best for massage use. You can mix scents to create your own blend. Aromacures indicates that you should keep in mind that oriental and spicy oils can become overpowering if used in excess. Wood scents work well with most oils.

Make sure the lid is tightly closed and shake the bottle to mix well. Label all aromatherapy blends so you will know how to make it again.

Store your blends in a dark, cool place. Brown bottles and proper storage can help them last for years.

Tips & Warnings
According to Aromacures, blends should be chosen from the same category. For example, you might select two or three scents from the earthy category. Other categories are floral, woodsy, herbaceous, spicy, oriental, mint and citrus. Dreaming Earth Botanicals offers a variety of aromatherapy recipes.
Rosemary and some other essential oils are not safe for pregnant women. Always make sure the scents you want to use are safe. Caution is advised because some oils are not safe for use with animals. Before using any type of aromatherapy on your pet, consult your veterinarian. Essential oils should never be ingested or applied undiluted to the skin.
