How to Troubleshoot a Powermate Electric Generator
Powermate's line of electric generators provides lots of power in a small, light-weight package. These generators are known for their reliability and ease of operation. However, problems will eventually develop, even if the generator is regularly maintained. Because these generators do not have complex engines, troubleshooting one is fairly simple and is mostly a matter of checking the fundamentals. The compressor needs a proper spark, proper fuel, oil to lubricate and cool the engine and a clean fuel delivery system. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Spark plug wrench
- Wire brush
- Champion brand RN14YC or equivalent spark plug
- Feeler gauge
- Torque wrench
- Unleaded gasoline of at least 85 octane
- Fuel stabilizer chemical
- SD, SE or SF grade oil
- Wrench
- Carburetor cleaning solvent

1
Remove the spark plug with a spark plug wrench and clean any ash deposits on the tip of the spark plug with a wire brush. If the spark plug is damaged, replace it will a Champion brand RN14YC or equivalent plug.

2
Set the spark plug's gap and install the spark plug. The gap is the distance between the tip of the spark plug and the negative electrode, which looks like a hook. The gap must be between .028 and .031 inches. Use the appropriate sized blade of a feeler gauge to check the gap. To increase or decrease the gap, bend the negative electrode. Tighten the spark plug into the engine at a torque setting of 14 ft-lb with a torque wrench.

Use the proper gasoline. The generator will only run properly with unleaded automotive gasoline with an octane rating of at least 85. Note that gasoline will become stale after several months, so always add a fuel stabilizer chemical when filling the tank with gasoline. Fuel stabilizer chemicals are commonly available at most hardware stores.

Check the generator's oil level. The oil filler cap is at the bottom half of the front of the generator. Powermate generators vary pn how their oil level is checked. Some models feature a dipstick. If the oil level is lower than the "Full" mark on the dipstick, add oil until the oil level reaches the mark. Other models do not have a dipstick, in which case oil should be added until it reaches the filler opening. Only use SD, SE or SF grade oil.

5
Clean the carburetor if the problem persists. The single-barrel carburetor is located on the left side of the generator. Remove the bolt which holds the air cleaner assembly to the top of the carburetor with a wrench, then turn the generator on. Spray carburetor cleaning solvent directly into the barrel of the carburetor in short increments to avoid stalling the engine. The cleaning solvent is readily available in an aerosol can.

Hello, I have a Coleman Powermate 5000. The problem I have is that it backfires and runs like garbage after starting without a load on it,and will continue till I shut it off. I have put fresh gas in it, cleaned the carburetor, and I've also changed the plug and oil many times.
