Instructions

    • 1

Decide what the word "cute" means to you. To some, it might mean bright colors, lacy curtains and whimsical accessories, while others may envision dark wood, clean lines and lush fabrics. Spark your imagination by looking through magazines and catalogs.

    • 2

Measure your space. Take into account window heights and the space needed for doors. Don't forget appliance doors. You don't want your breakfast partner whacked by the refrigerator door every time you open it.

    • 3

Make an accurate scale drawing of your space on the graph paper, with the pencil and ruler. Use one square to represent 1 foot, or whatever works best for you. Tape four pieces of graph paper together in a big square to make a larger work space.

    • 4

Measure the height, width and depth of a comfortable chair if you are going to build a bench for the nook. Decide now whether you need the bench to offer additional storage and make sure there will be room to open it.

    • 5

Get the measurements of any furniture that will go in the breakfast nook and make paper cutouts to place on your graph-paper floor plan. It's easier to visualize a room if you have something tangible to work with, and it's far easier to move paper cutouts than actual furniture.

    • 6

Use paint chips and color swatches to complete your graph paper floor plan, if you'd like. The fabric and paint you saw in separate stores may not look as good together as you imagined.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask for detailed measurements of an actual piece if you are ordering online because the dimensions given on websites are not always accurate or complete. Don't forget your accessories--plants, clocks and coordinated linens can be adorable finishing touches.

  • Sit in the proposed nook space before building anything to make sure you will not end up with one seat in a constant draft and another that is always in full sun.
