How to Connect Marine Batteries to Boats
Your battery is your boat's heart. Without a battery, your boat will not start, and you cannot enjoy many of the electrical gadgets, such as radios, electric coolers, refrigerators and other nautical delights. Installing your battery correctly will ensure a safe and happy trip on the water for you and your family. Once you understand the basics, you can add more power or life to your battery for extended stays on the water by adding more batteries to your boat.

How to Connect Marine Batteries to Boats
-
1
Wear safety goggles when handling batteries to keep from being seriously injured. Batteries contain caustic chemicals that can burn skin, damage mucous membranes, including the eyes, and even ignite and explode so handle with great caution.
-
2
Replace all batteries at the same time if your boat has more than one. Only replacing one will damage the longevity of the newer battery because it will only charge as fast as the older battery in the series and will drain faster too.

3
Visually inspect the wiring leading to the battery and make sure it is in good condition. Determine which battery terminal is positive (red) and which is neutral (black). Find the corresponding red and black connection wires. Always connect red to red and black to black.
-
4
Connect the neutral wire (black) to the black terminal on the battery first. Connect the positive wire (red) to the positive (red) terminal last. If connecting two batteries, connect both neutral (black) wires to the neutral (black) terminals first and then connect both positive (red) wires to the positive (red) terminals to avoid a spark that could cause an explosion.

5
Connect the negative port of your first battery to the positive port of your second battery to increase the voltage by adding another battery to a bank. Always keep one battery excluded from the "house" batteries to use as a start up battery. Add a second battery to the house battery in a series to get more power at one time. These two batteries will drain at the same speed, and you will not get an extended life from each charge but you will be able to use more appliances.
-
6
Connect the positive port to the positive port and the negative port to the negative port on two batteries to increase the length of a charge and add another battery to a bank. This house battery configuration is a parallel configuration. This will increase the amount of time you can use the battery life for appliances but not the number of marine appliances you can use at one time.
