How to Create Computer Logos
If you are planning on creating your own business, you will want to have a Web presence. Even if your business will not be selling anything on the Internet, having your own Web page serves as a powerful form of advertisement. This is because many people now turn to the Web to locate even the local stores and services they want to use. And an important part of having a Web page is making sure that all the elements of the page, including the logo, look as professional as possible. If you want to have a good looking logo for your Web site, you can hire a computer graphics artist to make it for you. Or you can use the freeware program GIMP to make it yourself.

1
Go to GIMP.org and download the GIMP application. Make sure you get the latest "stable" version, since the beta versions are usually a bit buggy. Install GIMP to your computer. A shortcut to the program will appear on your computer desktop.
-
2
Click on the shortcut to start the program. When it comes up, select "File," click "Create" and then click "Logo." You will see a list of more than 20 types from which you can choose. As you hover over a logo type, a short text message will pop up with a description of that particular logo. Click on the one that sounds most like what you would like to use for your Web page logo. A new dialog box will open.

Adjust the particular attributes of the logo you picked. Each logo has different ones, so that while one might use a gradient, another might use a color or a pattern. Choose the font type and size and enter the text you want to use. It might be the full name of your company, or the initials if your company has a long name.

Click on "Windows," then "Dockable Dialogs" and then "Layers." If you don't apply any effects to the background of your logo (such as a drop shadow), you can hit the eye next to it to hide the background. This will create a transparency for the logo so that it can be placed upon any other background.

Select "File" and click "Save." Name the file, select the location to which you want to save it and select the file type (PNG works well). Select "Merge Visible Layers." Then click "Save."
