How to Make Federal Tax Payments Online
The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System website is a site officially administered by the federal government that offers a secure way for you to make federal tax payments on a variety of tax forms at any time. The EFTPS Online also allows you to schedule your tax payments in advance. Your tax payments are then withdrawn automatically from the checking or savings account that you specify when you enroll in the program.

Enroll in the EFTPS program through their website (see "Resource") or by calling EFTPS customer service. For business payments, call (800) 555-4477. For individual payments, call (800) 316-6541. Have your Taxpayer Identification Number ready, which will be your Employer Identification Number if you are a business or your Social Security Number if you are paying as an individual. Also have your financial institution information ready, including your bank's routing transit number and your checking or savings account number.

Obtain your Personal Identification Number and Internet password. Your PIN will be sent within 15 business days of enrollment to the taxpayer address the IRS has on record, along with further instructions on how to obtain your Internet password. Call EFTPS at (800) 982-3526 with your taxpayer identification number and PIN ready to receive your temporary Internet password that you can change later on.

Log in to EFTPS Online by clicking the "Make a Payment" button and entering your taxpayer identification number, PIN, and Internet password. Once you set up your online account, you can proceed to scheduling payments.

Enter the specifics of your tax payment. Either enter the form number or use the drop-down menus to select one. Click "Next" to also select the type of tax you will be paying, for example, estimated payments, extensions or audit adjustments. Click "Next" when you are finished.

Enter your payment information, such as the amount paid, tax period and date of payment. You will be taken to a confirmation screen. Click "Make Payment" to process the payment information. Retain the EFT acknowledgement number for your records as proof of payment.
