How to Operate a Hookah
A hookah (or shisha) is a large glass waterpipe used for smoking tobacco. Many cultures use this device for various purposes, generally in a common setting amongst friends, but it was originally used amongst noblemen. The machine works by sending the tobacco smoke through water, thereby "purifying" it. Hookahs are currently used all over the world and have gained popularity. If not used properly, the smoke can have difficulty coming through the hoses and the effect will be lost.
Things You'll Need

- Coals
- Lighter or other fire source
Instructions

-
1
Fill the vase/bottom of the hookah with water, to where the stem/top will only be covered by an inch of water when inserted.
-
2
Insert the main hookah stem into the base. It should fit snugly with no air able to escape.
-
-
3
Place the metal tray on top of the stem (unless your stem comes with the tray already fixed onto it).
-
4
Plug the hoses into the hole ports that protrude from the base of the hookah.
-
5
Pack your tobacco into the bowl, but keep it loose--sprinkling works best. It needs to be loose so air can pass through it. Do not pack the tobacco past the rim of the bowl.
-
6
Place a metal screen on top of the packed tobacco bowl.
-
7
Place the packed bowl atop your hookah, which should fit snugly into place.
-
8
Light your coals and let them get extremely hot. When they are at their red-hottest, put them on top of the screen. If they are bunched up, break them up and spread them around the screen.
-
9
Put the hose in your mouth and inhale. Enjoy your tobacco!

Tips & Warnings
Don't use too much coal or the smoke will be bad.
If you aren't getting good air flow, check the hose and air release valve to make sure nothing is clogged.
