How to Cleanse the Mouth Palate

When you go to a wine tasting, you want to try the various complex flavors of each individual wine (or beer). If you taste one wine right after another, the flavors will mix and you won't be able to appreciate the true nature of the second or third selection. This is why cleansing your palate between sips of wine is essential to making the most of your wine tasting experience. It isn't difficult to cleanse your palate, but it may be difficult to take the time between sips as you will surely be eager to move on to the next wine. Remember, savor the flavor and enjoy each moment to get the most out of your wine tasting experience. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sip your first selection. Generally, your first taste will begin with the aroma seeping into your nostrils to coordinate with your taste buds. Start with lighter beer or wine selections first as they will not have as strong a flavor, making cleansing easier.

    • 2

Eat a piece of bread or a cracker. There is no rush here. You will still have the wine flavors in your mouth and you will be able to differentiate more as you chew on the bread. Be wary of butters and cheeses while wine tasting. These may have flavors that can impede your ability to cleanse your palate and compete with the flavors of the wine.

    • 3

Sip on water. This will help wash the bread down and clear any flavors left from the wine. Don't add lemon to your water, but unflavored sparkling water is fine.

    • 4

Move on to the next selection and repeat Steps 2 and 3 between each wine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't eat candy or mints or chew gum at least a half an hour before you go wine tasting. These are strong flavors that will linger in your mouth and alter your tasting experience.

  • Save meals for after your wine tasting. This will prevent burping and fullness from affecting the flavors. You will also probably find a nice new selection to add to your dinner menu.

  • Limit tasting to five or six selections. It is better to appreciate a few at a time than confuse your memory with too many selections.

  • Wine and beer are alcoholic beverages and should be consumed responsibly. Never drive while under the influence of alcohol.
