How to Make Natural Hair Oil

Save

Hot oil treatments have been used for many years to help heal dry and damaged hair. Although commercial hot oil treatments work well, they are expensive and often contain artificial ingredients. By making your own oil treatments, you can help care for your hair using natural, healthy ingredients.

Things You'll Need

  • One or more natural oils
  • Glass or microwave safe dish
  • Microwave
  • Shower cap (optional)

Single Oils

  • Select a natural oil. Good natural oils for hair care include jojoba oil, coconut oil and olive oil. Some of these oils, such as olive oil, are available at most grocery stores. Other oils may be available at natural grocers, health food stores or online. For most types of hair damage, a combination of coconut oil and jojoba oil work well. If you can't find either of these, simple olive oil works well.

  • Heat the oil in the microwave in a glass or microwave safe dish. Test the oil on the inside of your wrist to make sure it isn't hot. The amount of oil you will need will depend on the length of your hair. If you have short hair, six tablespoons of oil should be sufficient. If you have long hair, you may want to heat as much as 1/3 of a cup. How much time your oil will need to be heated will depend on the power of your microwave and the amount of oil. Start with 30 seconds and test the oil. Continue heating the oil in 30 second increments until it is hot, but not so hot that it will burn your scalp.

  • Shampoo and towel dry your hair.

  • Massage the oil into your hair and scalp. Leave it in for 10 to 20 minutes. For very damaged hair, wear a shower cap and leave the oil in overnight.

  • Re-wash your hair. It will have absorbed the oil and should be healthier and less dry.

Multiple Oils

  • Choose two or more oils. A common recipe is to use two parts jojoba oil with one part olive oil.

  • Heat the oil in the microwave using a glass or other microwave safe dish. Test the temperature of the oil on the inside of your wrist to make sure it isn't too hot. The amount of oil you will need will depend on the length of your hair. If you have short hair, heat a total of six tablespoons of oil.

  • Massage the mixed oils in to your hair and leave it in for 10 to 20 minutes. As with single oils, if your hair is very damaged, you can leave it in over night by using a plastic shower cap.

  • Wash your hair. Your hair will have absorbed the oils and should be more shiny and healthy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Work with the proportions on oil mixtures until you find one that works well for your hair.
  • Don't over heat the oil to avoid the risk of burning your hair and scalp.
