How to Make a Ribbon Embroidery Chain Stitch Flower

- 4mm silk ribbon in about 12 inch length
- chenille needle (sharp with a long eye)
- fabric for background

Assemble the materials.
Plan to make a sample to try the technique, so use a scrap of fabric and a ribbon color that will show the stitch. Thread the needle and pierce the needle through the close end of the ribbon and pull back on the ribbon to anchor.

Pull the ribbon through the fabric from the back. Insert the needle down at a point near where it came up, and come up about 1/4 inch away. Wrap the top thread around the point of the needle and pull the needle to the top carefully.

Make the next ribbon embroidery stitch.
Insert the needle down near where it came up in a parallel direction and bring it back up close to where the first stitch started. The point is to make this pattern into a circle or flower shape. You may make a center with two stitches in opposite directions or three stitches in a triangle.

Continue with the flower design.
Make the ribbon embroidery chain stitch around in a circle until the flower is as large as you want.

Secure the stitching.
Push the needle to the back and run the needle through the fabric back under the flower design. Cut the ribbon close on the backside.
