Prank phone calls have long been a popular sport for slumber party guests. Young kids; however, are no longer the only pranksters. Disgruntled employees, unhappy neighbors or random strangers are increasingly calling in pranks on unsuspecting victims.
For example, after a bad date it is common to give out a fake number. The rejected date then texts or calls whoever owns the fake number.

Use a reverse directory service to see if you can find the information wanted. If information is not public you can purchase the information if it's available from an online phone information system. See resource box at end of article for more information. Often cell phone numbers are available for extra cost.
You can call your phone company and ask to set up Call Trace which will usually cost you a few dollars but be worth peace of mind.

If the prank call is repetitive, obscene, threatening or you suspect harm is intended, then you should call the police and lodge a complaint. They will take steps to determine who is calling you. When specific threats are involved it is no longer a simple prank call.

If the prank call is a fax line calling you, then you can plug in a fax machine to your phone. If your phone is a cell phone then you will need to sign up for a service such as eFax which converts the fax to email.

If you are not able to find out the identity by using reverse phone directory, then you might try *69. You can dial *69. Often pranksters block caller id and call back numbers so this has low success rate.
