How to Make Cabinet Doors Out of Plywood, Glue & Laminate Flooring
The look of a cabinet is largely determined by the look of the doors. One of the basic methods of determining the look of a cabinet's doors is in the choice of materials used to create them. Expensive woods tend to make expensive looking cabinets, but for those unwilling to spend hundreds of dollars on the cost of the materials alone, there's an inexpensive option for creating doors that stand out from the norm using primarily a sheet of plywood, some glue and a square of laminate flooring. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the cabinet to determine the size of the cabinet doors. Measure from the inside edges of the cabinet and add ½ inch to the measurements so that the cabinet doors will overlap the sides of the cabinet.
-
2
Cut the plywood panel to the size needed and cut the laminate flooring to a square that's ½ inch smaller than the plywood panel. If it's necessary to use multiple laminate planks for size, connect the planks and measure them joined together before cutting to size.

3
Sand the sides of the panel smooth, using a graduated set of sandpaper grades. Begin with coarse sandpaper and work your way up to a fine paper, changing grade as you sand the surface as smoothly as possible with each until you reach the sanded finish you desire.
-
4
Apply a layer of paint or stain to the rear and sides of the panel. Place three layers for best results, allowing the individual coats to dry between each application.
-
5
Apply a layer of sealant to the painted or stained surface and allow the sealant to dry.
-
6
Make a mark on the front of the plywood panel 1/2 inch from each corner.
-
7
Apply the adhesive to the rear of the laminate flooring square and then place the flooring in the center of the plywood panel, using the marks to place the panel squarely. Apply firm pressure to place the flooring securely. If more than one piece of laminate flooring is used, connect the flooring together with the adhesive before placing onto the plywood.
-
8
Glue ½ inch laminate reducer strips onto the edge of the flooring leading to the edge of the plywood surrounding the laminate square. Cut the reducer strip using a mitre saw at 45 degree angles for placement. The reducer strip should create a beveled edge to the flooring, covering the plywood completely
-
9
Install the hinges to the rear of the plywood panel and screw the handle to the front of the laminate flooring to complete the cabinet door.
