How to Keep Concrete Patios Cool Enough to Walk on

Patios are great for enjoying your back yard without having to deal with ants and other bugs that frequent the grass. Patios also provide a convenient, flat, clean surface for outdoor furniture, barbecue grills, and for kids to play games. A concrete patio can become very hot when sunshine beats on it during warm weather, however, making it unpleasant to walk on with bare feet. A few different methods can help.

Things You'll Need

• All-weather rug or carpet
• White or off-white paint
• Garden hose

Instructions

1. Purchase a large umbrella or gazebo to place over the patio or part of the patio. This blocks sunlight and keeps the concrete cooler. A gazebo also can be screened to protect against mosquitoes and other flying insects.

2. Cover part of your patio with an all-weather rug or carpet. These items not only are functional in keeping your feet cool on the patio, but can add a stylish look when combined with your outdoor furniture.

3. Paint the patio white or off-white. The painted surface will stay cooler than bare concrete in sunlight.

4. For a quick option, spray water onto the patio with a hose whenever you need to cool the concrete down enough to walk on with bare feet.
