How to Use Epsom Salts for Constipation
Epsom salts, also known as magnesium sulfate, is used as a soaking aid for the treatment of sprains and bruises. It can also be taken internally as a treatment for constipation. Mixing a few teaspoons of Epsom salts in water makes a saline laxative to be used for the short term relief of constipation which can generally produce a bowel movement in as little as 30 minutes or up to six hours in adults and children over 12 years of age (or in children between six and 12 at a lower dosage).

Pour 8 ounces of water into a glass.

Measure 2-4 teaspoons of Epsom salts into the glass. Stir to completely dissolve the salts.

Drink the salt solution.

Repeat the dosage in four hours if needed.

Tips & Warnings
For children over six and under 12 years of age, use 1-2 teaspoons of Epsom salts in 8 ounces of water.
Do not exceed more than two doses in 24 hours. Do not use Epsom salts as a treatment for constipation in children under six years of age. Do not use without a doctor's recommendation if you have rectal bleeding or if you are pregnant. Do not use Epsom salts if you have kidney disease, nausea or vomiting. Do not use Epsom salts for constipation if you are on a magnesium-restricted diet. Do not exceed the recommended dosage within 24 hours or use for more than one week. Seek medical treatment if Epsom salts do not produce a bowel movement.
