Save

If your child is fascinated with trains, he will love a railroad-themed bedroom or train-themed birthday party décor. Consider making a train decoration such as a railroad crossing sign. Railroad crossing designs are simple and require only two colors--yellow and black. Railroad decorations are perfect for any child who loves trains. Make this easy and inexpensive railroad crossing sign to hang in your child's bedroom or at his next birthday party.

Things You'll Need

  • Large cardboard pizza box
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Thumb tack
  • Pencil
  • Yellow acrylic craft paint
  • Black acrylic craft paint
  • 2 paper plates
  • 1-inch paint brush
  • 2-inch paint brush
  • Cup of water
  • Small keyring
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

  • Draw a large circle on the cardboard pizza box top. To make an exact circle, stick a thumbtack in the center and tie a string to it. Pull the string taut to the very edge of the pizza box. Tie a pencil to the end of the string and move it all the way around to mark a circle.

  • Cut out the circle from the pizza box.

  • Squeeze a generous amount of yellow paint onto a paper plate. Dip the 2-inch paint brush into the paint and paint the entire circle yellow. Allow the painted cardboard to dry and then apply a second coat.

  • Rinse the paint brush in a cup of water. Allow the paint brush to dry.

  • Squeeze a smaller amount of black paint onto a paper plate. Use the 2-inch paint brush to draw a large "X" on the circle. Create an "X" by making a straight line across the diameter of the circle and criss-crossing it with another straight line.

  • Use the 1-inch paint brush to create a black border around the perimeter of the circle.

  • Use the 1-inch paint brush to paint a black capital "R" on both the left and right of the circle. Allow to dry completely.

  • Use the hot glue to attach a small key ring to the backside of the sign. Allow the glue to dry. Use the key ring to hang the sign on the wall or door.
