How to Take Armour Thyroid & Calcium

Thyroid disease requires the use of thyroid hormone replacement therapy, usually for life. If you maintain optimized hormone levels, this will ensure symptoms of thyroid disease do not reappear. It is important to ensure full absorption of thyroid medication to maintain those hormonal levels. When and how you take Armour Thyroid affects the medication's absorption because it is thought that calcium binds with the thyroid hormone, which decreases your body's absorption of the drug.

Things You'll Need

• Armour Thyroid
• Calcium supplements or products containing calcium (calcium-fortified juice)

Instructions

1. Take Armour Thyroid on an empty stomach, at least one hour before meals to ensure maximum absorption.

2. Take calcium supplements, antacids or calcium-fortified beverages at least four hours after taking Armour Thyroid.

3. If you forget to take your Armour Thyroid, take your missed dose as soon as you remember.

Tips & Warnings

• If you take Armour Thyroid in two or more doses a day, schedule your calcium supplements at a time when they will not interfere with Armour Thyroid absorption.
