Shoplifting is not only illegal but it also hurts many businesses bottom line. In a way, shoplifters are taking money directly out of the pockets of people who rely on the success of their product or store to get by. One way to try and dissuade shoplifting is to ask (or demand) people to stop with the practice. An easy way to do this is to create a simple sign that cuts to the point of the matter.

Creating Simple Stop Shoplifting Signs

1. Place the construction paper or cardboard on a flat surface, such as a table or on the floor.

2. Write a message asking patrons to stop shoplifting. To drive the point home, consider placing warnings about the consequences of shoplifting, including any possible fines and jail time that comes with being caught.

3. Select a location to put up your sign. An ideal location would be near the front door or anyplace within the store where items are frequently shoplifted. Be sure the sign is clearly visible.

4. Hang the sign up using tape to secure the sign to the wall or window.

Tips & Warnings

• Consider laminating the sign to protect it from the elements.

• If your establishment is a frequent shoplifting target, beware that the shoplifters may take your sign as a joke.
