How to Change the Insurance on a New Car
When you buy a new car, your current insurance policy will provide protection until you can add the vehicle to the policy. Once the vehicle has been added, you will be able to change the insurance on the new car by modifying or endorsing your policy. All you have to do is contact your insurance company shortly after purchasing your new car.

1
Contact your automobile insurance agent or a representative for your insurance company. Tell them that you have purchased a new car and need to add it to your policy. Your new car can replace an existing vehicle on the policy or it can be added as an additional vehicle.
-
2
Provide them with the VIN for the car. The VIN is the vehicle identification number and is found on the dashboard beneath the windshield on the driver's side of the car.
-
-
3
Wait for the agent or company representative to enter the new VIN into the system. Your policy will then be adjusted for the new vehicle and you will be given a new premium for your policy.
-
4
If the addition of the new vehicle increases the premium, change the deductible on the policy to help lower the cost of the insurance. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium will be for the policy.
-
5
Tell the agent or company representative that you want to increase or decrease the coverage amounts or limits for the vehicle. If the coverage amounts or limits are adequate on the policy, they can stay the same for the new vehicle.
