How to Decorate Styrofoam Heads

Decorating Styrofoam heads is an artistic way to create unique home accents. The decorated heads can also be used as fancy places to store headbands, hats or wigs. The Styrofoam head gives you a large and defined shape to cover with paint, gems, beads and more. The only limit is your imagination. However, you do need to use small decorations to help keep the curved shape of the head. Large pieces will appear awkward and lumpy on the rounded item.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Floral Styrofoam Head Decoration

    • 1

Use a clean and damp rag to wipe any dust off the Styrofoam head.

    • 2

Cover the Styrofoam head with Styrofoam-safe black craft spray paint. Let dry. Add a second coat to create a solid color and let dry.

    • 3

Add some glue to the back of a yellow rhinestone gem and secure it to the top of the Styrofoam head. Pick five rhinestone gems in a single color, such as blue, and glue them around the clear gem to create a flower shape.

    • 4

Leave some space between each flower and continue to glue flowers made from a single yellow gem and five colored gems around the entire head. Let dry. Change colors for variety, using one yellow and five red for one flower, and one yellow and five green for the next flower.

    Rainbow Styrofoam Head Decoration

Use a clean and damp rag to wipe any dust off the Styrofoam head.

    • 6

Cover the Styrofoam head with Styrofoam-safe black craft spray paint. Let dry. Add a second coat to create a solid color and let dry.

    • 7

Glue a ring of single colored gems, such as yellow, around the bottom of the Styrofoam head at the neck. Pick another singe color, such as red, and glue a single ring around the neck, leaving a tiny bit of space to create a black line between the first and second ring. Repeat process to create single-colored rings of gems around the entire head. Let dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look for rhinestones gems that are "flatback." These have rhinestone fronts and flat, metal backs for easy gluing.

  • If you're fingers become sticky from the glue, use a clean toothpick to help place and secure the gems to the Styrofoam head.

  • If you have problems fitting flower shapes on the bottom of the Styrofoam head, judge how much room you have left. If there is not enough room to create whole flowers along the bottom edge, use a few colored gems to create the impression that the flower pattern keeps going past the cut-off point. For example, try gluing a clear gem along the bottom with only three colored gem petals so it looks like half a flower.
