How to Choose a Career by Self-Assessment Test

Self-assessment tests help people learn about their personality traits and interests so they can find jobs that best fit their styles. Talking a self-assessment test is relatively easy, and tests are offered online and at most career centers.

Choose a Test

  • Choose a career-based, self-assessment test, such as the Strong Interest Inventory.

  • Go through the questions slowly and carefully. Answer the questions honestly. If in doubt, choose the answer that most suits you. The answers to questions will be scaled to show interest, such as: very dissimilar, dissimilar, moderately dissimilar, mid-range, moderately similar, similar, very similar

  • After you complete your test, review it to make sure every question is answered. Then submit it for your assessment.

  • Make sure you understand how to read your scores and assessment. There usually is information somewhere in your test results that explain how to read the scores.

  • Use your results to help determine how your likes and dislikes translate to the work force. Consult a career counselor to discuss the results of your test and suitable career field.
