How to Cut Iris Flowers

Irises come in several varieties and are hardy flowers grown from a root system known as the rhizome, which resembles a potato. The taller classes of iris, which range from 16 to 27 ½ inches in height, are great for cutting because they have several blossoms on each stem; these are the intermediate bearded, miniature tall bearded, border bearded and tall bearded irises. Most will bloom in mid to late spring, with the exception of the intermediate bearded class, which blooms in early spring. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut flowers before buds are open. This prevents any damage to the delicate blossoms if you cut them when they are open.

    • 2

Cut irises in the early morning or late evening. Stalks have more water and nutrients in them at these times of day.

    • 3

Use sharp pruning shears and cut the stalk at a slight angle.

    • 4

Remove any foliage at the base of the stalk.

    • 5

Place the flowers in a full container of water indoors in the shade. Use a container tall enough to support the lengthy stalks.
