How to Identify Massey Tractors
Massey is the name typically given to all Massey-Harris and Massey-Ferguson tractors built after 1953, when the Massey-Harris company merged with Harry Ferguson. Before 1953, the Massey-Harris company was building tractors with its purchase of J.I. Case Plow in 1928. What does all that mean? It means that models of Massey tractors vary depending on the company that produced them, but you can tell them apart by examining the tractor for identifiable markings.
Instructions
-
-
1
Take a picture of the tractor with a camera. You can keep the picture in the camera, print it out on your printer or go to a photo kiosk at a store such as Walmart.
-
2
Show the picture to a tractor a relative, friend or tractor dealer to see if they can tell you what type or model of Massey tractor it is.
-
-
3
Compare the picture with the one found in a book for Massey tractors. Try the "Big Book of Massey Tractors" by Robert Pripps or the "Encyclopedia of America Farm Tractors" by C.H. Wendel (see Resources).
-
4
Write down any numbers or letters found on the tractor. This can include numbers found on the engine, an attachment such as a plow, the tires or other parts on the tractor.
-
5
Type the numbers found on the tractor parts into a search engine online, such as Google. If you can find a description of the part, it should include the model of tractor, as well.
-
6
Take or send the information, along with a picture, to an antique tractor dealer to see if they can identify the model of Massey tractor.

Tips & Warnings
Having a picture of the tractor is much easier than trying to describe what it looks like.
The paint used on a tractor can be used to identify the specific type or brand of tractor.
Tractors that are rusty or are missing parts may be difficult to identify.
