How to Season a Barbeque Hotplate

Many modern barbecue grills are now more than just a grill and are actually deluxe outdoor cooking centers with additional features. One of the more useful features now available on grills is the hotplate. The hotplate makes it convenient to heat up various side items while grilling the main entree. A brand new hotplate should be seasoned before using it, and this seasoning process may also be necessary for older hotplates that may have been neglected and are showing a great deal of wear and tear on the hotplate's surface.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish soap
  • Water
  • Wire brush
  • Heavy leather gloves
  • Clean rags
  • Vegetable oil
  • Wash the hotplate with dish soap, hot water and a wire brush.

  • Warm the hotplate over low heat to dry it.

  • Apply a moderate amount of vegetable oil to a clean rag. Put on heavy leather gloves to protect your hands from burning.

  • Begin rubbing vegetable oil to the hotplate while it is still being heated. The plate will begin to smoke as it burns off the oil.

  • Continue to rub more oil on the hotplate over the next five minutes as it is burned away.

  • Allow the hotplate to cool, and then apply one more light coat of oil to finish. Oil before and after each use to keep the hotplate seasoned and prevent rust.
