Removing permanent eye makeup can be a difficult procedure. In most cases, it is not possible to completely remove all traces of the dye, but laser treatments may be able to fade the ink considerably. While there are other methods of permanent eye makeup removal that can fade tattoo ink--such as dermabrasion or salabrasion--these procedures are not as effective as laser removal. Make sure the person performing the procedure is a board certified plastic surgeon. Improper use of lasers can cause permanent damage to the skin. The area being treated in this case is extremely sensitive; extra precautions should be taken to ensure that you are selecting a doctor who is reputable and knowledgeable.

If the tattooing procedure was recent, allow enough time for skin around your eyes to properly heal. Because laser removal can be painful and cause swelling and blistering, removing the makeup too soon may cause scarring and other adverse reactions.

Set up a consultation with your surgeon. Do not agree to the surgery until you know several important facts, including the side effects of laser removal; how many treatments will be necessary; the cost of each treatment; what sort of wound care may be needed to prevent damage or scarring to the treated area; and how many years of experience your surgeon has performing laser removal. Your surgeon should be able to answer all of these questions.

Take care of the area before, during and after the permanent eye makeup has been removed. Unprotected sun exposure can damage the area or slow the healing process, so be sure to apply a sunscreen containing an SPF of at least 30 to the skin surrounding your eyes. Scabbing and crusting can occur after treatment; do not pick at or tear off the scabs, as this can cause slow healing and result in scarring.
