How to Boot Someone on Yahoo Messenger

Yahoo! Messenger is a good way to communicate with friends and family. But since other Yahoo! users can contact you as well, it's possible to receive unwanted messages from badly-behaved users. Because Yahoo! Messenger users are not able to create or manage their own Yahoo! chat rooms, you cannot obtain the administrator access necessary to forcibly disconnect or "boot" someone from Yahoo! servers. You can, however, add offensive users to your "Ignore List," blocking their communication attempts. If a user's behavior is particularly offensive, submitting a report may prompt Yahoo! administrators to investigate that user's behavior and suspend the person's account--in effect, legally booting a user on your behalf.

Instructions

  1. Ignore Users

    • 1

Double-click the Yahoo! Messenger icon to bring up your Contact List.

    • 2

Click on "Messenger," and select "Preferences."

    • 3

Click on "Ignore List" in the list pane on the left side of the "Preferences" window.

    • 4

Click on "Add," and type in the name of the contact you wish to ignore. You will see that name appear in your "Ignore List." Contacts in your "Ignore List" will be blocked in both Yahoo! Instant Messenger and in Yahoo! Chat.

    • 5

      Open your favorite web browser.

    • 6

      Navigate to http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/abuse/

    • 7

      Click on "Reporting Abuse."

    • 8

Click on "Report Abuse on a Specific Yahoo! Property," and select "Messenger" from the list.

    • 9

Click on the "Messenger 8 Report Abuse Form" link and fill out the form. The report sent to Yahoo! may prompt the company's server administrators to investigate the other user's behavior, and potentially suspend that person's account.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also appear to be offline to specific users by right-clicking their user name, selecting "Stealth Settings," and clicking on "Appear Permanently Offline to this User." This action can be reversed using the same steps.

  • While software tools not authorized by Yahoo! may exist to improperly obtain Yahoo! Messenger administrator privileges or forcibly disconnect other users, use of such applications would violate the "Member Conduct" guidelines of the "Yahoo! Terms of Service." Use of such utilities could also subject a person to criminal penalties in the U.S. and other countries.
