How to Make Ear Candles at Home

If you want to remove excess ear wax and blockage from your ears, then consider using an ear candle. Ear candles work by placing the unlit end of the candle into your ear, and allowing the smoke to penetrate your ear canal. Although many companies sell ear candles, they are not a medical treatment to cure any illnesses or ailments. You should consult with your doctor before attempting to use an ear candle.

Things You'll Need

  • ¾ inch wide wooden dowel
  • Vegetable oil
  • Muslin cotton (untreated)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • 1 lb. paraffin wax
  • Double boiler
  • Rubber gloves
  • Tongs
  • Wax paper
  • Pin

Instructions

    • 1

Sharpen one end of the dowel rod to a sharp point. You can use a knife to shave one end of the wooden dowel. Once you sharpen the dowel, dip it in vegetable oil.

    • 2

Cut the muslin cotton cloth into a ¾ inch strip that is 2 to 3 times longer than the wooden dowel. It is best to have too much cloth, versus not having enough to muslin to wrap around the wooden dowel.

    • 3

Melt the paraffin wax in a double boiler. You can make a double boiler by filling a large pot with water, and placing a smaller pot inside the larger pot. You then place your wax in the smaller pot to melt.

    • 4

Lay the wooden dowel across the double boiler to preheat it before you begin making the ear candle.

    • 5

Place a strip of muslin cloth into the wax gently. Completely submerge the strip into the wax.

    • 6

Lift one end of the muslin out with tongs. Allow the wax to cool almost completely before continuing. You still want the wax pliable enough to wrap it around the dowel rod.

    • 7

Create the base of the ear candle. Once you are on your last section of muslin cloth strip, wrap it around the dull end to create a thick band of material at the bottom of the ear candle. Leave ¼ to ½ of an inch uncovered on the dowel rod.

    • 8

Smooth the wax with your hands to ensure that there are not imperfections. Dip the sharpened end of the candle into the hot wax.

    • 9

Remove the dowel rod from the muslin cloth. As the candle cools, gently grab the exposed end of the dowel rod, and twist until the muslin cloth releases from the rod.

    • 10

Poke a hole in the sharpened end of your ear candle with a sharp pin.
Lay the candle on wax paper and allow it to cool. You can continue to make more ear candles.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ear candles can be dangerous. If you do not properly administer and fit the ear candle into the ear canal, they will cause severe burns to the inner and outer ear. Please consult a professional before using an ear candle.
