How to Refinish Metal

Whether you're looking to refinish and restore outdoor metal furniture or other pieces of metal, there are several tactics you can use to literally transform your old metal furniture. In fact, it can be much cheaper to refinish your metal pieces than it can be to replace them. Of course, you will need to procure the right materials before getting started. Keep in mind that this process can apply to any rusted metal furniture you may find at yard sales as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Steel wool or wire brush
  • Naval jelly
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Paintbrush
  • Metal primer paint
  • Metal spray paint
  • Metal finish
  • Remove the rust from your metal furniture or other metal pieces using steel wool or a wire brush.

  • Purchase naval jelly from your local hardware store. Put on your gloves and safety glasses before applying the naval jelly.

  • Use a small paintbrush to apply the naval jelly to all rusty spots on your furniture. The rust should be dissolved in roughly 15 minutes.

  • Wash the rust and naval jelly residue off with a hose. Allow the metal to dry before proceeding.

  • Apply metal primer paint to the surface of the metal with a paintbrush. Allow the paint to dry before continuing.

  • Apply two coats of metal spray paint finish in the color of your choice. Allow time for the finish to dry between coats.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear your safety glasses and gloves throughout the entire refinishing process to stay safe, especially when working with the naval jelly.
