Things You'll Need:
- Power Point (optional)
- A copy of the instructions for the students (see attachment)
-
Step 1
turkey4travel.comThe students will ideally be in groups of two. They will research one of the cities listed in step 3 (or of your choosing), and will then present both the required information and information of their choosing about the city (see handout for more details). This should be a 10 minute presentation. I give them 3 days in the library and, depending on class size, typically 3-4 days of class for the presentations (two groups per 50 minute class.
-
Step 2
privateislandsonline.comAfter their main presentation, they will represent and discuss a cultural aspect of their city (see handout for more details). For example, one thing that they could do is find a simple recipe from that city, make it for the class, and provide a printed recipe, tell how it's made, and talk about any cultural significance behind the dish. This part of the presentation should be 5-10 minutes. In all the presentations should be no more than 20 minutes, but no less than 15.

Step 3
arthiveI usually choose the groups, but I let the groups sign up for their city. I've used different cities in the past; this year I'm using the following:
1. Cairo, Egypt
2. Istanbul, Turkey
3. Berlin, Germany
4. Havana, Cuba
5. Turtle Island, Fiji -
Step 4
You can copy and paste this handout (feel free to modify it!):
Cities Project
Description:
1. You and your partner will sign up for a city to present. The following information is required for every group presentation (you must include the following information in your presentation:
a) Name of city and country.
b) Location: Is it in Asia? Europe? What other countries are surrounding it? For example, is France just north of the country your city is in?
c) Population: How many people live in your city?
You will also need to come up with and discuss some of your own findings. For example, you could research and discuss traditions, holidays, food, religion, seasons, music, or a number of other things related to your city. The point of this project is to present information in a way that is clear, easy to understand, and informative. In other words, whether you discuss one topic, like traditions, or a combination of topics, like holidays, food, and religion, you must do so in a way that everyone will be able to understand you. Therefore, I would suggest that after you develop your presentation, you practice delivering it several times before your final presentation in class. This part of the project should be approximately 10 minutes long.
2. In addition to the presentation, you must present one of the following to the class: a poem from your city, a recipe from your city, a song from your city, a folk legend from your city, or a ghost story from your city. Remember, you must be able to recite the entire poem, prepare the recipe and tell us how it was made (tell me if you want to do this and I'll help you), tell the entire folk legend, or tell the entire ghost story. Also, you should provide a handout for your story, song, etc. This part of the project should be approximately 10 minutes long.
*All projects MUST be 15 minutes for the groups of two and 20 minutes long for the group of three.
3. Visuals: You will need to provide some sort of visual aid for your project so that your classmates can get an idea of the city you are talking about. It is up to you what you decide to bring; however, you may consider the following: Power Point, handouts, poster, video clip(s), etc.
*10% of this grade is showing up for every presentation!
