How to Find Trendy Clothes at Goodwill

Each season, designers send models down the runways in new and trendy designs that seem to stem purely from the designers' imaginations. In reality, designers draw inspiration from a variety of sources; they often build on previous trends, even those from decades ago. Their new iterations of these old trends are frequently not far from the original. Hence with strategy and planning, you can build a trendy wardrobe by shopping primarily at Goodwill. Best of all, when someone asks you where you got your fabulous new sweater, you can simply say, "It's vintage."

Instructions

  1. Determine Fashion Trends

    • 1

Finding trendy items at Goodwill requires knowledge of current fashions. Look through magazines and collect pictures of trendy outfits that inspire you. You can also find inspirational pictures from books, movies or the Internet.

    • 2

As you look through the images, begin to compile a shopping list. Consider which trendy items you would most like to have in your wardrobe, and write them at the top of your list.

    • 3

When your list is complete, consider which trends hark from an earlier time. For example, trendy fur vests or coats were reintroduced when designers admired the clothing items of past generations. Perhaps you will be able to find a nice fur coat at Goodwill.

    Go Shopping

    • 4

Bring your shopping list with you to Goodwill. As you browse through the racks, be sure to keep an open mind. If you are looking for high-waisted jean shorts, try on high-waisted jean pants: you can have them altered later. Similarly, if you are looking for a blazer, don't be afraid to explore the men's and boys' sections of the store. Remember that you can always have items shortened, hemmed or taken in.

    • 5

After trying on your clothes, check for stains, rips and snags. If the item fits perfectly, buy it. If it needs to be altered, keep in mind that while you will have to pay extra for alterations, most clothing items at Goodwill cost under $10.

    • 6

If you need to have things altered, find a good tailor/seamstress in town. Bring pictures of how you want the item to look. Keep in mind that your tailor may not be familiar with the latest trends, so guide the alterations by being as specific as possible. If you sew, you can save money by doing the alterations yourself.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't find much on your first visit to Goodwill, try to come back another day; Goodwill stores are constantly restocking and adding new merchandise.

  • Consider visiting a Goodwill in another area, as some stores have larger selections.
