How to Install an External Floppy Disk in a Parallel Port

Before computers came equipped with the versatile USB port, computers had parallel ports. These ports are made up of several pins and allow hardware to connect to the system. It is possible to connect external floppy disk drives to the computer if you are in need of a floppy disk drive and your computer doesn't have one installed.

      Connect the power cord to the back of the external floppy drive and plug it into a wall outlet.

      Insert the parallel port cable into the back of the external floppy drive. There may be small screws on each side of the cable that you can screw into the computer. This helps the cable stay connected to the computer.

      Plug the other end of the cable into the parallel port on the back of the computer. Make sure the cable is connected.

      Insert the driver installation CD into the computer. If the driver installation wizard does not launch automatically, click "My Computer" and then double click the CD drive icon.

      Select "Install.exe" from the available icons and the driver installation launches.

      Accept the license agreement and follow the remaining prompts to complete the driver installation. You can now use the external floppy disk drive.
