When you purchase some computer upgrades, such as video cards, knowing the type of motherboard in your computer is crucial to prevent wasting money and time with a product that will not work with your computer. Finding this information can be difficult, however, because the Windows Device Manager displays the individual components on the motherboard but not the motherboard itself. Use Belarc Advisor, a free utility, to access the motherboard information on your computer and determine what you have installed.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the Belarc Advisor website using the link in the "Resources" section of this article. Click the "Download" button, and save the file to your desktop.

  2. Step 2

Double click "advisor.exe" to install Belarc Advisor.

  3. Step 3

Read the license agreement. If you agree to the terms, click the "I Agree" button, then click "Install."

  4. Step 4

Double click the "Belarc Advisor" shortcut on the desktop to launch the program. Click "Continue," and click "No" to skip downloading updates. Belarc Advisor will scan your system and create a profile of the hardware that is installed. This process may take several minutes depending on the speed of your computer. When it is complete, a page with information about your system will be displayed in the Web browser.

  5. Step 5

Examine the section labeled "Main Circuit Board." The manufacturer and model number of your motherboard will be listed under "Board."
