How to Donate a Bicycle to Charity

Donating a bicycle can light up the life of a child or adult, depending on the charitable organization you decide to donate to. There are a variety of international, national and local bicycle donation programs, some of which are geared toward children and some toward adult bicyclists. Although donating a bicycle is easy, many people do not donate because they believe their old bicycle is beyond repair. Below are steps you can take to ensure that your good deed does not go undone.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a bicycle charity. Finding the best organization to donate that old bicycle is at your fingertips. There are a number of national bicycle donation programs that can be found on the Internet, such as Bikes for the World, as well as local bicycle donation programs you can research in your community. For example, Syracuse, N.Y., hosts the annual Central New York Bike Giveaway, which collects used bicycles that are repaired and given to needy families and children.

Dig out that old bike and clean it up. Locate the bicycle(s) you would like to donate and give it a good wipe-down. Although bicycle donation programs will have volunteers to repair bicycles, they will appreciate your saving them some time by dusting off that old bike.

Don't assume your bike is beyond repair. Many volunteers who work for bicycle donation programs are experienced with bicycle repair. They will often pull parts from several bicycles to complete one good bicycle to be given away to a disadvantaged child. Many children do not care what the bike looks like--they are just happy to have one to ride that they might not otherwise be able to afford.
