How to Stop Scalp Itch

An itchy,flaky scalp, also known as dandruff, could be due to a skin condition such as, dry scalp, psoriasis, eczema, yeast fungus or seborrheic dermatitis. In addition, you may have developed an allergic reaction to your shampoo or hair care products. There are medicated shampoos that can target itchy scalp conditions and some home remedies you can try as well.

      Switch shampoos, conditioners and all hair products. You might be having an allergic reaction to the products you are using in your hair. Try another shampoo that is formulated for dry scalp.

      Use a zinc pyrithione-based shampoo if your itchy scalp is due to dry scalp, dandruff or a fungal infection. This type of shampoo is effective in reducing fungus on your scalp as it has antifungal and antibacterial properties, according to the Mayo Clinic. Shampoo everyday for two weeks until itchy scalp is relieved. After you have controlled your scalp itch, you can alternate the medicated shampoo with a regular shampoo.

      Use a tar-based shampoo if you have seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis. The coal tar in this type of shampoo slows down the process of the skin cells drying and flaking off causing scalp itch. Shampoo everyday for two weeks and if your scalp stops itching, alternate this shampoo with the use of your normal shampoo.

      Use a selenium sulfide-based shampoo. This type of shampoo will reduce the skin cells from sloughing off. Shampoo everyday for two weeks and see if the itchy scalp is relieved and then you can alternate the use of this shampoo with your normal shampoo.

      Make an oatmeal paste to relieve itchy scalp. Soak ¼ cup oatmeal in a cup of water for 20 minutes until the oatmeal is soft. Drain any excess water until you have a paste. Rub the oatmeal paste on your scalp and leave it on for approximately 10 minutes. Wash your hair as normal.
