The Apple iTunes program has a beautiful and effectively designed logo. With subtle blended gradients and carefully curved shapes, the logo elegantly displays a Web 2.0 aesthetic and has become the default online symbol for music and media files. If you want to recreate the iTunes logo for your own Web or print design purposes, you can use Adobe Illustrator's extensive tools and filters to quickly trace the original design and imitate the color shading.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Digital picture file of the iTunes logo
  • Adobe Illustrator
  1. Step 1

Open Adobe Illustrator. Go to "File" in the main menu and select "New." Leave the default document settings and click "OK."

  2. Step 2

Go back to "File" and select "Place." Go to the location on the computer where the iTunes logo is saved. Select the file and click "Place." Drag your mouse across the artboard and create the approximate size you want for the iTunes logo. Illustrator will automatically resize your picture file to fit inside of the box.

  3. Step 3

Go to the "Layers" palette and double-click on "Layer 1." In the "Layer Options" window, check the boxes for "Lock," "Show," "Print," "Preview," and "Dim Images To." Set the percentage for "Dim Images To" to "30." Click "OK."

  4. Step 4

Go back to the "Layers" palette and click the "New Layer" button at the bottom. "Ctrl+click" (or "cmd+click" for Mac) on the eye icon of Layer 2 to change it to "Outline" mode.

  5. Step 5

Select the "Pen Tool" in the "Tools" panel and trace and outline the CD shape of the iTunes logo using the dimmed photo as a guide.

  6. Step 6

Repeat step 4. Select the "Pen Tool" and outline the music note shape on this new layer.

  7. Step 7

Go the "Layers" palette and select "Layer 2." "Ctrl+click" (or "cmd+click" for Macs) on the eye icon to restore it to normal mode. Select a white-gray gradient and fill the CD shape with this color.

  8. Step 8

Select "Layer 3" and "ctrl+click" ("cmd+click" for Macs) on the eye icon to return it to normal mode. Select a green-white gradient and fill the music note shape with this color.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment with the color gradients for both the CD and music note shapes. Your iTunes logo will look more realistic and authentic if you create subtle and complex gradients. The color gradients help both shapes blend together.
