How to Remove Permanent Haircolor

While permanent hair color will fade, it won't completely go away on its own until it grows out. However, you can remove permanent color with a color-removing product, which can be found at beauty supply stores. Once the permanent color is removed, the hair will be lighter or mostly without color; removing hair color does not restore your hair to its original color. Normally, a color corrector is used either to lighten too-dark hair or before applying a new hair dye to fix a color problem. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Color correcting products typically come with two bottles. Shake both bottles, then mix equal amounts of the two processing liquids in the plastic (or ceramic) bowl; any bowl that is not metal will work. Mixing the ingredients activates them.

    • 2

Apply the mix directly to dry, unwashed hair using the applicator brush. To remove all the color, be sure to thoroughly wet the hair with the color correcting mixture.

    • 3

Leave the mix on your hair to process. Processing time varies depending on how much color you wish to remove and whether or not you use a cap. In general, if you put a plastic cap over your hair, you leave the mix on for 10 to 15 minutes. Without the cap, leave the mix on your hair for 15 to 20 minutes. But follow the directions for the specific product you are using.

    • 4

Rinse out your hair, getting out all of the color correcting mixture. Then shampoo hair three or four times to maximize the amount of color washed out.

    • 5

Repeat the process if enough color has not come out. Otherwise, you can now re-color your hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • These are the general steps for using most color-correcting products. Be sure to read and follow the directions of the product you use; they might not be exactly the same as these steps.
