Glassware is prone to all types of etching and clouding. Etching is usually caused by soft water and factors in use of the dishwasher. Technically, it occurs when metals leach out of the glass. You cannot remove etching, but you can prevent it by changing your dish-washing routine and taking special care with your glassware. With some knowledge, you can keep glassware shining and clear. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hand wash any irreplaceable glassware or antiques. This will significantly lower the chance of etching, which mostly occurs in the dishwasher.

    • 2

Turn down the water temperature. You can control water temperature on some dishwashers, but more than likely you will have to turn down the water temperature on the water heater. The temperature should fall somewhere between 130 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 3

Place fewer dishes in the dishwasher when loading. This will give the dishes a more thorough rinsing.

    • 4

Reduce the amount of detergent you use. One tablespoon of detergent will suffice, and half that if the detergent is concentrated.

    • 5

Hand dry the glassware at the end of the cycle. This will remove leftover detergent from the glass.
