An insurance fraud detective investigates insurance claims on behalf of an insurance company to ensure that fraudulent claims are minimized. The job of an insurance fraud detective is a very important because insurance companies lose money every year to fraudulent claims. While most insurance companies agree that becoming a successful insurance fraud detective requires a particular skill set, insurance companies are more likely to disagree on how to best attain these skills

  1. The Path to Becoming an Insurance Fraud Detective

      Complete your high school and/or college education. While college education is not a requirement for becoming an insurance fraud detective, it is nonetheless highly preferred by most insurance companies. In addition, you may want to take some college-level courses in criminal justice.

      Apply for the Certified Insurance Fraud Investigator (CIFI) exam with the International Association of Special Investigation Units (IASIU). You will find a link to the application page in the resources section. The cost of the CIFI exam in 2009 is $400 for non-IASIU members and $200 for IASIU members. The CIFI exam will test your skills in some of the following areas: property investigation, fraud investigation, ethics and claims fraud investigation. Note also that in order to sit for the CIFI exam, you must meet basic eligibility requirements. Under the SIU Experience section, you must have no less than 30 points. Under the Experience and Education section, you must have no less than 100 points total to qualify to sit for the CIFI exam. Points are awarded based on prior educational and professional accomplishments. For example, an applicant with a bachelor's degree is awarded more points than an applicant without one.

      Pass your CIFI exam and become a certified insurance fraud Investigator. Search for insurance fraud positions on search engines such as Careerbuilder.com, Indeed.com, Simplyhired.com, and Indeed.com, and apply for the positions. Make sure to mention in your application packet that you are a CIFI.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may want to apply for IASIU membership and receive approval as a member before applying to sit for the CIFI exam in order to benefit from the exam discount for members.

  • Note that IASIU does not offer any specific study material to prepare for CIFI exam. IASIU believes that the applicant taking the CIFI exam should already possess knowledge of investigation techniques.
