Instructions

    • 1

Place 10 ½ oz. of lye in a plastic container.

    • 2

Slowly add the lye to the cold water. Stir until the lye crystals dissolve.

    • 3

Sit the jar in a container filled with cold water. Bring the temperature of the lye mixture down to 95 degrees. Hold this temperature, but do not allow it to get hotter than 98 degrees.

    • 4

Melt the vegetable shortening in a stainless steel pan. Add the olive and coconut oil once the vegetable shortening melts. Keep this mixture between 95 and 98 degrees as well.

    • 5

Combine the lye solution with the vegetable shortening solution once both reach the proper temperatures. Continuously stir while you mix the two solutions.

    • 6

Continue to stir until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Pour the soap into a large rectangle plastic container. You may need to use more than one container because you do not want the soap to be more than 1 ½ inches thick.

    • 7

Cover the plastic containers with lids. Drape towels or blankets over the containers to keep the soap in a cool and dry environment. Allow the soap to set for 24 hours.

    • 8

Uncover the soap. Cut it into 2 by 3 or 3 by 4 rectangles. Allow it to cure and set for an additional 24 to 48 hours.

    • 9

Carve the soap into shapes while it is still pliable. Use the soap when it is firm. You may need to cure the soap for an addition 2 to 3 days.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add liquid soap dyes to your soap to give it a different color.
