How to Make Cover Button Jewelry

Fabric-covered buttons can be used to make attractive and eclectic jewelry designs. Create a matching necklace, bracelet and ring set from a collection of vintage fabric cover buttons, or create a matching jewelry set with matching buttons you can make from leftover fabric swatches. Add beads to separate the buttons or dangle them close together for a charm-style bracelet or necklace with pizazz.

Instructions

    • 1

Select an assortment of fabric covered buttons to make your jewelry. You can find vintage cover buttons in local antique and thrift stores and a selection of new fabric-covered buttons at fabric stores. You can also choose to make your own fabric-covered buttons with fabric scraps and a button kit from your local discount store. You'll need six to eight buttons for a bracelet, one to make a ring and between 15 and 30 to make a necklace, depending on the length.

    • 2

Measure the length around your wrist. Cut a section of 1/2-inch-wide ribbon that coordinates with your cover buttons to fit your wrist, plus 18 inches. Tie a double overhand knot 2 inches from one end of the ribbon.

    • 3

Thread a button over the ribbon all the way to the knot. Tie a double overhand knot in the ribbon to behind the button to hold it in place. Continue to thread the buttons over the ribbon for the length of your bracelet, tying double overhand knots to hold them in place.

    • 4

Measure 2 inches from the last cover button on the bracelet and cut away the excess ribbon. Tie your bracelet on your wrist with the loose ends of the ribbon. Add a drop of jeweler's glue to the first and last knot you made to hold them in place.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2, 3 and 4, but measure enough ribbon for any size necklace that you like. Make the necklace the same way as you made the bracelet.

    • 6

Cut the metal hook from the back of one fabric-covered button. Add a generous amount of jeweler's glue to the top of a ring form. Press the back of the button into the glue and let it dry. You now have a complete cover button jewelry set.
