How to Wear a Kilt Belt

A kilt belt is an essential part of the kilt wearer's wardrobe. In years past, a couple inches of tartan showed above the belt because it was excess from the width of the kilt fabric. Today the kilt belt hides the top of the kilt.

      Wear a brown belt for casual wear. The belt should be between two and three inches wide with a brass buckle. The belt covers the top of the kilt.

      Wear a black kilt belt with a silver buckle for formal evening wear. The kilt belt should cover the top of the kilt and be over a fancy ruffled or pleated shirt that hangs down over the kilt. The black kilt belt can also be worn with a dark day coat.

      Wear a kilt belt instead of a waistcoat (or vest). If both are worn, the waistcoat should not show below the belt.
