How to Build Society Logos
If you are part of a newly formed society or organization, you will probably want to have your own society logo. Even if you are a part of a longstanding society you may have no logo or want a new one. Normally you might turn to a professional graphics artist to create this log for you, but you could also use the freeware program GIMP to create your society logo.

1
Brainstorm out your ideas on paper. Consider the nature and history of your society, as well as the overall theme of the logo. Create series of basic sketches, and select the one that best represents your society.

2
Go to GIMP.org and download the current stable version of GIMP. Install it to your computer. When you do, a shortcut to the program will appear on your desktop.

Click on the shortcut to start the program. Now select "file" from the menu and click "New."In the sizing dialog enter the size you want the log to be, as well as the resolution. Since you might want to use it for some large format later you should make the document larger than your current needs, as enlarged taster images have a tendency to look fuzzy. Make the background transparent so you can place the logo against the background of your webpage or letterhead.

Go to the "layers" panel and click on the icon at the bottom to create a new layer. Now select the "Pen" tool from the toolbar. Use it to draw in the outer shape of you logo design. Now click on the "Paths" tab and right-click on the Path you see listed. If you want a color filled logo, select "Make Selection" and use the "Paint Bucket" tool to fill the selection with the color of your choice. In instead you want a logo made up of lines, select "Stroke Path" and an line will be applied to the outline.

Repeat Step 4 to create all the inner parts of your design, creating a new layer for each element you add to the design for easier editing. Now save your work as either a GIF or a PNG, both of which preserve transparency, which a JPEG will not.
