Instructions

    • 1

Make and bake the cake according to the cake box recipe. Pour the cake batter into two 8 1/2-by-4 inch cake loaf pans. Bake the cake until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

    • 2

Allow the cake to cool completely. This will take about an hour. Place the cake on a wire rack to allow it to cool faster.

    • 3

Add food coloring to the white icing. Reserve a small amount of the white icing to outline the car. This will be the base frosting for the car. Cover both pieces of the car in frosting.

    • 4

Place one loaf cake on a cake board. Remove 3 inches from this loaf. Discard this piece of cake, or save it for a dessert later. Center the second loaf cake on top of the first cake. This will be the top of your car. Trim the corners of the car to give it a more rounded appearance.

    • 5

Attach the four cookies on each corner of the bottom cake. These will be the wheels for the car.

    • 6

Outline the windows and hubcaps with the reserved white icing.

    • 7

Use the black icing to add more embellishments to the car cake. Outline the hood, doors and bumpers.

    • 8

Cut the gumballs in half. Use these gumballs for the headlights and taillights. Use a knife to add any additional details such as spokes on the wheels.

    • 9

Store the cake in the refrigerator to prevent the icing from running.
